| Project Information: | Kitwe Central Hospital (KCH) is located in Kitwe, in Copperbelt Province in Zambia. It is run by the Provincial Health Department. The eye unit at KCH is accommodated in 2 converted houses, about 2 kilometres from the main hospital. The eye unit is responsible for the provision of eye care to Copperbelt Province, which has a population of about 1,7 million. The estimated prevalence of blindness is 1%, of which 50% is due to cataract. Glaucoma and corneal scar are the other leading causes of blindness. The eye unit comprises an outpatient clinic , a 27 bed ward, an operating room, all other necessary ancillary/support services. Cataract case finding is undertaken in the province. The ophthalmologist runs eye clinics and does surgery both at the hospital and on outreach within the province and to the neighbouring Luapula and Northern Provinces. |
