Irreversible Blindness

- Almost half of children who go blind in poor countries die within 2 years of losing their sight
- 90% of those that survive never get the chance to go to school
- Blindness in a parent often results in the children being removed from school to care for the parent and provide for the family
What are the causes of Irreversible Blindness?
Irreversible Blindness can be caused by Glaucoma, Onchocerciasis, injuries to the eye, measles, vitamin A deficiency and other conditions. For those in the developing world, dads, moms and children alike, poverty causes blindness and blindness results in deeper poverty. It's a vicious cycle that is difficult to break
How CBM helps
CBM is committed to establishing community-based rehabilitation programs for children and adults with irreversible blindness and other disabilities. Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) is a strategy within community development for the rehabilitation and equalization of opportunities and social integration of all people with disabilities. CBR is implemented through the combined efforts of disabled people themselves, their families and the appropriate health, education, vocational and social services. CBM supports a number of schools for the blind.

Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) is a strategy within community development for the rehabilitation and equalization of opportunities and social integration of all people with disabilities. CBR is implemented through the combined efforts of disabled people themselves, their families and the appropriate health, education, vocational and social services.
CBR is a community development approach that looks at the whole person, not just the impairment. It seeks to change and overcome challenges present in social and physical environment and enables people with disabilities to be as personally independent as possible. CBR also enables the disabled to have social relationships and live as part of their community, contributing to their own livelihood.
