Leave No One Behind in Emergency Planning

Indonesia, a country exposed to a wide range of natural hazards, including earthquakes and tsunamis, will host the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction 2022 (GPDRR).

When disaster strikes, it affects everyone. But if you are a person with a disability, you are at even greater risk.

Persons with disabilities make up an estimated 15% of the world's population - more than one billion people - yet they are among those most affected by disasters.

The GPDRR will bring together global leaders from governments, UN organisations, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to share knowledge, discuss the latest developments and trends in disaster risk reduction and make recommendations to accelerate the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. The conference will take place from 23 to 27 May in Bali, Indonesia.

As a member of the Disability Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction (DIDRR) Network, CBM will use the event to advocate for investment in the empowerment, leadership and meaningful participation of persons with disabilities in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) policy and practice. CBM believes that persons with disabilities are ultimately the most important experts in their own lives. Therefore, the first step in planning is to ensure that persons with disabilities are actively involved in the decision-making process. The knowledge and leadership skills of persons with disabilities are essential in designing and implementing DRR plans that are universal and relevant to all of society.

CBM has taken active steps to ensure that our work in disaster-prone areas incorporates Disability Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction (DiDRR) into pre-disaster, post-disaster and long-term recovery work. We work in disaster-prone countries such as Haiti, Niger, Kenya, Cameroon, Zimbabwe, Nepal, the Philippines and Bangladesh.

At the conference, CBM will share innovative practices and lessons learned from its disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation activities related to disability from around the world. This will be done at two events organised by CBM:
